“A Study of Waste Manipulation Method In Pre-Consumer Zero Waste Design”
Pre-consumer zero waste design is emerging as an alternative to the wasteful production processes of fast fashion. This paper explores the current methods to pre-consumer zero waste design, and illustrates the waste manipulation method with a garment design case study. In this garment design, basic pattern cutting was applied to a traditional Turkish cotton fabric. The leftover fabric was then manipulated to embellish the garment. During the design process, careful consideration was given to the material’s features and the initial pattern cutting to create a cohesive final design. The development and widespread application of these innovative slow fashion production methods will directly contribute to the reduction of waste. These more responsible methods allow an alternative for fashion brands than the current system of producing cheaper and selling more. They give conscientious consumers an alternative purchase option.
