Textile and Fashion Design Department consists of; Weaving Design, Printing Design and Fashion Design Art Divisions. The department’s goal is to train designers who are cabable of producing contemporary creative and genuine desings; who can evaluate innovator ideas and are equipped with the basic production knowledge.
The programs have been formed with the approach of leading students to improve individual skills and characteristics of their own and to present original creative suggestions by using the relationship between color, material, structure, form and function.
Our students are supposed to study in weaving, printing and fashion design disciplines together as a whole education process during their four-year bachelor degree program.
The program consists of sector practice, educational excursions, workshops, exhibitions and fair participations as well as complementary courses supporting these three branches of textile and fashion department with artistic, cultural, occupational and technical aspects.
Students graduate with a project which is evaluated by the juri including our lecturers and representatives of the sector in the context of originality, technical adequacy and presentation.
Besides four years of bachelor degree program, Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University Textile and Fashion Department offers Master and Profficiency in Arts Programs, as well.
The birth of today’s Textile and Fashion Design Department dates back to the “Fabric Designs Studio” which was founded in 1938, in “General Decorations Studio” within the organization of Fine Arts School.
In 1958, Printing Studio was set up within the Fabric Designs Studio.
In 1966 Noble Decorations Department was named as the “Noble Decorative Arts Department” and enjoyed the first graduates of the “Textile Designs Studio”.
It continued under the title “Textile Arts Studio” within the Noble Decorative Arts Department between1971-1980.
In 1978 Weaving Studio was founded within the Textile Arts Studio.
Between1980-1982, name of the Textile Arts Studio was changed as “Textile Arts Department”.
As of 1982, name of İstanbul Fine Arts Academy was changed as “Mimar Sinan University under the Higher Education Law. Applied Arts Department within the Fine Arts Faculty continued to graduate students in the textile subdivision under the name Textile Division.
The department under Fine Arts Faculty continued to provide education as the “Textile Department” as of 1994 and as the “Textile and Fashion Design Department” as of 2004.
Today the Textile and Fashion Design Department consists of;Textile and Fashion Division and Weaving Design, Printing Design, Fashion Design Art Divisions under the former.
After Prof. Sabih Gözen’s chairmanship between 1936 and 1976, Prof. Beyhan Saldıray (between 1978 and 2000) and Prof.Aygun Tuğay ( between 2000 and 2002) and Prof. Zeki Alpan (between 2002 and 2007) have driven the chairmanship of the department. Since 2007, the chairmanship has been administered by Prof. Kemal Can.
Textile and Fashion Design Department students have been awarded by many contests like “Young Fashion Designers Contest ” arranged by İTKİB; “Bir Desen Tasarla” home textiles contest arranged by Taç Linen, Zorlu Holding; “Leather Days Design Contest”; “Fabric Design Contest” arranged by İTHİB; “Denim Apparel Design Contest” arranged by DENİMDER and they have been awarded with master schoolarships in various European Countries.
Participating in many national and international textile fairs, Textile and Fashion Department has been driven many projects in collaboration with the sector as well.The department has been arranging national and international exhibitions, conferances, symposiums and seminars collaborating with many universities and fashion foundations.

4 Hrs/week, Theory-Studio, 3 MSGSU Credits. Content: This course discusses the interrelations between artistic creation and design in general terms. Two lectures focus on the active explanation of each and every subject separately selected by each student, from intellectual, cultural and functional perspectives, whereas the other two lectures assess authentic and personal proportions according to their eminent qualities, and provides basic program principles. TKS 205 PRINTING TECHNIQUES I

Content: This course deals with the solution and printing stages of the "rapport" (connection of motifs to one another) and "color separation" processes of the design to be applied on the textile products by means of printing without changing its editing features. TKS 207 INTRODUCTION TO ART AND DESIGN II
4 Hrs/week, Studio-Theory, 3 MSGSU Credits.
Content: Two lectures provide information about principal textile subjects (such as weaving, printing, and clothing) in the context of materials, production conditions and current fashion. Whereas two other lectures involve the active presentation of positive results by reference to various examples and methods applied to reach the desired levels of functionality, authenticity and suitability. And one final day of the week is allocated to the analytical identification of correlation between the a.m. positive results focused on both semesters, and the other branches of art, by reference to various examples. TKS 208 BASIC DESIGN II
8 Hrs/week, Studio-Theory, 6 MSGSÜ Credits. Content: Usage of Art and Design elements and principles, which mentioned at Basic Design I, for designing the originals, inspired by natural environment, artificial environment and art history. Pre-Requisite: - Assessment methods: The number of mid-term exam: 1, the format of mid-term exam: assignment delivery. The coefficient of grade is 50%, final of the mid-term assessment is done by project delivery. The grade is at least 50, its coefficient is 50%. Teaching Staff: PROF. KEMAL CAN

TKS 301 DESIGN FOR WOVEN TEXTILES I
4 Hrs/week, Studio-Theory, 3 MSGSU Credits. Content: Some projects which provides students learn the interrelation of design, color and weaves such as plain weave, twill, hopsack etc. to the structure of woven fabric in garment fabric products are given to the student. Students determine the materials and technical structure for the product and produce one of the projects. TKS 302 DESIGN FOR PRINTED TEXTILES I
4 Hrs/week, Studio-Theory, 3 MSGSU Credits. Content: In this course, various design drawings and motif illustrations are drafted, sketched and designed which are intended to be applied on longitudinal (métrage/metric) clothing fabrics through fabric/textile printing methods. In this study, the principles of affectivity, matching, harmony and continuity are investigated with respect to and from the viewpoint of their combination. TKS 305 PRINTING TECHNIQUES II
2 Hrs/week, Theory, 2 MSGSU Credits. Content: In this course the definition of continuity for longitudinal (métrage/metric) designs is made. The exercises for flat (uniform continuing of motifs), saunter (jumping/skipping of motifs), diagonal saunter rapport (diagonal jumping/skipping of motifs) systems are made. Beginning with a simple edition, the solution exercises for the rapport process are carried out. TKS 308 COLOR IN TEXTILE
2 Hrs/week, Theory, 2 MSGSU Credits. Content: Colors of textile are described within existence, meaning, language, measurement, sight seen of color; relation between dyestuff and textiles. Discussions are made with some samples and suggestions of students. Finally theoretical studies and practical applications are made. TKS 401 DESIGN FOR WOVEN TEXTILES II
4 Hrs/week, Studio-Theory, 3 MSGSU Credits. Content: Some projects which provides students learn the interrelation of design, color and weaves such as plain weave, twill, hopsack etc. to the structure of woven fabric in garment fabric products are given to the student. In this semester students use CAD systems and determine the materials and technical structure for the product to produce one of the projects. TKS 802 TEXTILE DEGREE PROJECT
18 Hrs/week, Theory-Studio, 10 MSGSU Credits. Content: Students develop, under the supervision of a counseling lecturer, a degree project they have proposed. A jury of lecturers in terms of authenticity, technical acceptability and presentation assesses these projects. Pre-Requisite: All courses Assessment methods: Students present their topic proposals to the jury on the preliminary jury date designated in the beginning of the half-year. There will be two midterm evaluations. First midterm is conducted by the counselor and second midterm is conducted by the jury. Those who get minimum 50 points in the exam by the counselor are entitled to enter the jury. Those having an midterm grade average of minimum 50 points are entitled to take the final exam. Midterm passing grade coefficient is 50%.

Content: In this course, plastic structuring of fiber art which is the intersection cluster of art and textile as well as relations with other art branches, environmentalist and performance arts being in the first position are explained to students who have studied Art and Design 1 having learned how to communicate with the common language of textile materials and techniques in their unique designs and as a result of such teachings students conduct three dimensional works and arrangements.
